SFPA Members at AWP 2018!

This year AWP is being held in Tampa, Florida! Will you be there? That’s the question SFPA members are asking on the list-serv and in our Facebook group. While we do not have a table at this year’s gathering, the SFPA is definitely encouraging members to connect with one another and to see the latest that’s going on!

Florida is home to two of our SFPA Grand Masters in Speculative Poetry, Bruce Boston and Marge Simon, and 20 members across the state. Among our members who are definitely going is our previous Secretary Shannon Connor Winward, Saba Razvi from Texas, and Lawrence Schimel at the A Midsummer Night’s Press. Our Elgin Award Chair Josh Brown says to be sure to stop by and say hello to Chef at The Third Man Books table. Chef is a big supporter of speculative poetry and prose and love to connect with speculative writers.

The AWP Conference & Bookfair is billed as “an essential annual destination for writers, teachers, students, editors, and publishers. Each year more than 12,000 attendees join our community for four days of insightful dialogue, networking, and unrivaled access to the organizations and opinion-makers that matter most in contemporary literature.”

Anticipated attendance is already estimated at over 2,000 presenters and readings, panels, and lectures, with over 800 presses, journals and literary organizations reflected. AWP will be March 7-10th.

If you’re going, or have other recommendations about things to see and do in Tampa, including great places to eat and find good books, or have tips on how to make the most of AWP and a visit to Florida, let us know in the comments below!
